Perceived Danger Pain (PDP)

Dan Buglio Introduces Perceived Danger Pain

There are so many acronyms to describe the science behind chronic pain – Neuroplastic Pain, TMS, MindBody Syndrome, etc. Do we really need another one? Pain Free You Recovery Coach, Dan Buglio believes we do. PDP stands for perceived danger pain. Perceived Danger Pain is a descriptive and accurate understanding of how pain works.

Dan explains that pain is a warning signal – that it’s our brain and central nervous systems’ way of warning us that something dangerous is going on. For example; if you touch a hot stove, your hand doesn’t create the pain – you’re touching hot metal and the brain is what turns on the pain signal to warn you to get your hand away from that hot stove so you don’t fry your skin.

Pain therefore, is a warning signal based on the perceived danger of what’s going on in the moment. The brain is interpreting the warning signal and the brain is forming an opinion as to whether or not there’s danger. If it believes there is danger, it will turn on those neural circuits that are perceiving pain to warn you. Thus, pain is not a reliable indicator of the condition of the body, but it’s a very reliable indicator as to your brain’s perception or opinion of the amount of danger your brain thinks you’re in.

The key is not to try and “fix” anything, rather to convince the brain that what its experiencing is not dangerous. We do this by sending messages of safety to the brain and teaching the brain that these are false perceptions and understanding that certain pain triggers are not dangerous. Please watch Dan’s video and you’ll understand why PDP makes complete sense.

How to Talk to Your Brain

In this video, Dan teaches you how you can talk to your brain to end your pain. He explains that partnering with your brain like it’s your friend can lead to a reduction of pain. Recovery becomes a conscious and intelligent approach, rather than going to war with your body.

Understanding that your brain is misinformed and it needs to feel safe is key. It’s the perception of danger that is what’s making you experience pain or discomfort. Having a playful and safe conversation with your brain is a great way to bring yourself to a place of peace and safety.
